アメリカは1970年代の石油危機に藻の研究開発を始めたが、2000年にこれを復活し、同時に先進バイオ燃料とバイオ製品の開発を推進するための企業間協力 (National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts) を発足させた。NAABBにはバイオ燃料だけはなく、バイオ化学を軸にした新産業の創造が目的である。
